When I Won't Be Frugal: My Son's Safety

As a parent we all want our kids to be happy, but more importantly we want our child to be safe. That's why I'm sharing this story about something I won't be frugal about.

Last year my son had outgrown his current car seat and I purchased him the Evenflo Chase Harnessed Booster Car Seat. I liked the booster for various reasons including the 5 point harness, the price, the reviews, and even the cupholders.

I did note at the time of purchase that the harness could only be used up to 40 pounds, but at the time of purchase that didn't mean anything to me. I just assumed after that I would be taking the harness out and simply using the seat as a high back booster and buckling my son in using the seatbelt in my car.

Fast forward until this summer when I came across a wonderful and informative Facebook group titled Car seats for the Littles (they have an equally amazing and informative website found here).

Through this site I learned a plethora about car seat safety. Including that it's best to rear face until age 4 (check out the studies, the statistics make sense) as well as when to switch to a booster seat.

I thought I would be switching my almost four year old son to a high back booster soon with just my cars safety belt, until I read about the safety issues with this. My son doesn't sit still in the car. If he didn't have his harness he would be sleeping hunched over, leaning down to pick up a toy of the floor,  slouching, etc. These things are safety issues. If he's moving around or sleeping hunched over he wouldn't be in the seat belt properly and therefore at risk for unnecessary injury if a crash or accident occurred.

Even though my son meets the height/weight requirements for a high back booster, or even the requirements of a cheap, low-back booster seat, they are not the safest option for him while he's in the car. The low back booster above may be small and convenient, but it's by far the safest and he's prone to slouching, incorrect belt position, etc. while seated in this seat. I highly recommend the article "Harness or Booster: When to Make the Switch"

After some research on combination car seats I have decided to purchase my son the Kids Embrace Batman Deluxe Combination Toddler/Booster Car Seat. Not only is it Batman (one of his favorites), it will also allow me to keep him in a 5 point harness until he reaches 65 pounds. He's almost 40 pounds right now so this will easily a year. After he reaches 65 pounds he'll still be able to sit in the seat as a high back booster so it's definitely worth the investment and knowing he is safe in my car is priceless.

So although I could simply continue using the Evenflo I previously purchased for my son and remove the harness, I'm going to invest in a new seat to continue to ensure he is as safe as possible while in my car. It's not frugal, it's not convenient like the low-back booster others use, but it gives me peace of mind knowing I'm ensuring my son's safety.

If you're still unsure or want more details about car seat safety I highly recommend reviewing Car Seats for Littles Website. They  post reviews for car seats, boosters, and more. If you have any car seat questions definitely ask the wonderful moderators of the Car Seats for Littles Facebook Page. They have techs on the site that can answer any car seat question!

    Mystery Shopping Trip: Thrift Store

I had the opportunity to complete another thrift store mystery shop this week. They are one of my favorite type of mystery shops because you never know what treasures you might find. The shop requires you to drop off a donation which requires you to actually get rid of stuff and then reimburse for up to $5 in purchases.

Here's what I found this trip:
    • $0.99 Bag of pens/pencils (for my classroom
    • $2.00 Wine Rack
    • $1.99 Children's Fleece Jacket

Shopper Reimbursement for items/services purchased: $5.00
Actual Amount Spent: $4.98 plus tax
    Shop Pay: $12
Mystery Shop Company: Reality Based Group

My goal is to post about all my mystery shops so if you're interested in mystery shopping you can gain some insight from an experienced shopper. If you would like to learn more about mystery shopping check out this post.
